Nursery Structure

Separate age groups

A research project, carried out by Blueberry as part of a larger study, found that the children in our setting gained more from their learning experiences when they were not mixed with younger or older children. The benefits the children received, from being in a learning environment that was specifically related to their age and level of development, outweighed those found in mixed age groups. Follow-up observations have also shown that stress levels are reduced because younger children are not being overpowered by older children, while the older children are able to continue with more complex activities without the risk of being interrupted by younger members of the group.

Small group sizes

Group sizes are kept small and do not normally exceed 12. We have found that this promotes a more relaxed atmosphere, which leads to greater involvement among all members of the group. We also believe that quieter children gain more confidence when they are not overwhelmed by larger groups. Confidence and self-assurance are vitally important to a child’s progression – anxious individuals are far less likely to benefit from the teaching and play experiences. Once confidence is gained in pre-school, children find it easier to adapt to the larger environment of the reception class.

Dedicated practitioner

Each child is allocated a primary and secondary practitioner or teacher, who is responsible for observing, assessing and planning their care and education throughout the year. They are also responsible for carrying out initial home visits and meeting with parents to discuss their child’s needs and progress.

Although the nursery cannot admit children before they are 18 months, this does not cause problems for those moving from other settings. It is estimated that 80% of children transfer from other nurseries, nannies or childminders, when they are between 18 months and  two-and-a-half years. This is predominantly down to the excellent reputation that Blueberry has gained for catering for older children, alongside the quality of the facilities and teaching staff available in our pre-school.

Individual profiles

We build and maintain a profile of every child through detailed observations and assessments. Parents are also invited to add to these records. The profiles include a large amount of photographic evidence for parents and children to keep and look back on throughout their time with Blueberry and beyond.

Food and Drink

Where possible our food and drink is organic. All meals, snacks and fluids are included in the fees, so that parents do not have to worry about supplying anything themselves. Special diets can also be catered for if required.

More information about how the nursery runs is included in the Parent Handbook, which is supplied once you have been offered a space.
